Himalayan serow (Capricornis sumatraensis ssp. thar) is a threatened animal, listed by
CITES in Appendix I and classed as “Vulnerable” by IUCN’s Red Data Book (IUCN, 2004). It has been given legal protection in other countries as well (Fox & Johnsingh, 1997; Green, 1987b; Shackleton, 1997; Wollenhaupt et al., 1997).
