Abstract of Project:
Research Team in Dhorpatan Hunting Reserve

Research member (Steffen) in blue sheep habitat

Blue Sheep (P. nayaur) is the main prey species for Snow Leopard and other mountain predators above the treeline in the greater himalayan region. It is listed least concern by IUCN red list, nevertheless research on its distribution in Nepal is widely lacking. Furthermore it is a high market value species due to its popularity for trophy hunters and one of the species available for hunting in Dhorpatan Hunting Reserve (DHR), Nepal.

Sustainable harvesting management as well as the conservation of a viable population as main predator feeding species demands for decent fundemantel research. Despite of DHR beeing a conservation area, illegal grazing, poaching and NTFP collecting activities occure and threaten the populations and natural habitats of Blue Sheep.

This fieldwork study aims on the collection of baseline data on habitat preference of Blue Sheep and therefor to contribute for following longtherm conservation efforts. With good knowledge about Blue Sheep ecology profund management suggestions can be developed to help conserving species diversity and sustainable harvesting of Blue Sheep.

Objectives are to assess Habitat Preference of Blue Sheep (Pseudois nayaur) in the Phagune and Barse Blocks of Dhorpatan Hunting Reserve during the premonsoon season through field work and statistical analysis.

The region is an important biodiversity hotspot under threat from logging and from setting fires in caves to drive bats away so the caves can be used for livestock. These activities are resulting the loss of roosts for bats. This project will educate the local people about the value of the bats through a variety of activities while determining the distribution of bats in the area. View Details   Go to Top
