Project Title : Status, Distribution and Habitat Use of Hispid Hare (Caprolagus hispidus) in Royal Suklaphanta Wildlife Reserve, Nepal.
Project Year : 2005
Project Leader : Bhupendar Yadav
Financial Supported By : National Trust for Nature Conservation, Nepal/SCP
Abstract of Project:
investingator collecting hispid hare pellets

The aim of this study was to explore the current status, distribution and habitat use of hispid hare (Caprolagus hispidus) in Royal Suklaphanta Wildlife Reserve. The main objectives were to study the status, distribution, habitat use and existing threats to the hispid hare. Different direct and indirect methods were used to complete the study.

The present study determined that pellet density of hispid hare was 90.90/ha, and population density was 1.01/ha. This indicates that the density of population is in decreasing way.

Distribution of hispid hare is restricted only in tall grassland such as Suklaphanta, Barkaula, Piparia area, may be Singhapur area. In the field observation no any evidence including pellets were seen near the water source. In Hispid hare habitat Ground cover was dense (75-100) %, Ground condition was dry (86.5%) in respect of wet area. Altogether, 14 grass species were found in hispid hare habitat in study area. Narenga species (RF-39.75%) was most preferred species of hispid hare followed by Siru (RF-13.84%), Kans (RF13.17%). Average height of Narenga of 6.6 ft was most preferred followed by Kan 5.6ft, Siru 3.9 ft. Habitat preference calculation was also determined that the hispid hare preferred only of tall grassland. They preferred foods as inner part of stem of Narenga, Kans, leaves of Siru and fruits of Paniu and others.

Existing threats were Fire, Invasion of grass species by trees (Broad leaves), Grazing, flood and predation. Action plan should be developed for the better management of hispid hare. Ecological study covering aspects on defecation rate, gestation period and impact due to current habitat management practices. Check dam should be constructed at the point where from the Mahakali River entered in RSWR. This is most dangerous for the Suklaphanta and for the Phanta’s animal like swamp deer and others. Illegal entrance of domestic animals should be controlled. Much attention should be given during grass burning because improper annual burning occurred at some places.
Key words:-Status, distribution, habitat use and Existing threats etc.
